Explanations of Shipping Container Dimensions and Weight Parameters

To ensure that both the volume and weight capacity of a container are fully utilized during loading, it is essential to carefully consult the container's main parameters, the most important of which are its dimensions and weight parameters. Due to differences in manufacturing materials and manufacturers, the dimensions and weight parameters of the same type of container may vary. Even containers made from the same material and by the same manufacturer may have slight differences in dimensions and weight if produced at different times. Therefore, full attention must be given when selecting a container.

1. External Dimensions

The external dimensions of a container are the maximum dimensions, including its permanent fittings, and are specifically stipulated in the recommended solutions of the International Organization for Standardization.

2. Internal Dimensions

(1) Internal Length: Refers to the distance from the innermost lining panel at the deepest point of the container entrance to the inside of the door when it is closed.

(2) Internal Width: Refers to the distance from the lining panel on one side wall to the lining panel on the opposite side wall.

(3) Internal Height: Refers to the height inside the container, excluding any protruding parts of the corner castings, also known as the clear height.

3. Door Opening Dimensions

The door opening dimensions refer to the width and height of the opening of the container door. Due to the strong structural component of the door header at the top of the door, the door opening height is smaller than the nominal internal height of the container.

4. Volume

The product of the internal height, width, and length of the container body (unless otherwise specified, "internal volume," "net internal volume," and "internal net volume" are synonymous).

5. Tare Weight

The tare weight of a container varies significantly depending on the manufacturing materials. For example, the tare weight of a steel container is generally about 1/3 heavier than that of an aluminum container.
