Conditions Affecting Humidity Inside Shipping Containers

If the container used is completely airtight, and the cushioning materials and cargo packaging materials inside the container do not release moisture, then after the container door is sealed, the absolute humidity inside should remain constant. This means that if the internal temperature is high, the relative humidity is low; conversely, if the internal temperature is low, the relative humidity is high.

However, in actual maritime container shipping, humidity changes within the container are not as ideal as described above. This is due to the influence of the following factors:

1. Although referred to as sealed containers, they cannot achieve complete airtightness, especially for aging containers, where fillers at the door seams and floor joints deteriorate over time, creating gaps.

2. During transport, due to external temperature changes, if the internal temperature rises, moisture within the container's wall linings (plywood) and floor may gradually evaporate. Although dried materials are used in manufacturing (typically requiring container floor moisture content below 15%), containers may sometimes be washed with water. After washing, the surface may appear dry, but the interior of the panels is not fully dried.

3. Sometimes, the cargo itself or its packaging materials (such as wooden boxes) contain a large amount of moisture, which is a major cause of cargo moisture damage inside the container.

4. Pallets made from green lumber are loaded into the container, or cushioning materials made from green lumber are used inside. The above reasons may cause significant water droplets to form inside the container.

Humidity Control Measures

1. Use Desiccants: Place an appropriate amount of desiccants (such as silica gel or calcium chloride) inside the container to absorb excess moisture.

2. Ventilation Control: Properly utilize container vents; open vents when sailing in dry areas, and close vents in humid areas.

3. Moisture-Proof Packaging: Use waterproof liners or vacuum packaging for moisture-sensitive cargo.
