What are the methods to prevent container sweat damage in sea freight?

Generally, there are three methods to prevent sweat damage in container sea freight: reducing the absolute humidity of the air inside the container; preventing sudden temperature changes on condensation surfaces; and using special coatings or other methods. The following details these three situations.

1. Reducing the absolute humidity of the air inside the container

To reduce the absolute humidity of the air inside the container, measures must be taken to remove some of the moisture from the air to prevent condensation. Specific measures include the following.

(1) Choose good weather for loading, avoiding rainy or humid conditions.

(2) Ensure cargo packaging materials and materials used for securing cargo inside the container are thoroughly dried with low moisture content.

(3) If loading cargo with high moisture content or damp packaging materials, use tight stowage methods to minimize the contact area between the air inside the container and the cargo. Avoid stowage methods that promote air circulation between cargo items.

(4) Use desiccants such as silica gel to remove water vapor from the air inside the container.

2. Preventing sudden temperature changes on condensation surfaces

Typically, the roof and outer walls of containers are made of aluminum or steel sheets with high thermal conductivity. Therefore, unless using insulated containers, it is impossible to prevent the impact of drastic external temperature changes on the inner surfaces.

3. Using special coatings and other methods

Due to the significant influence of external temperature and humidity during transport, it is difficult to completely prevent condensation inside a container. To avoid cargo sweat damage, methods must be sought that prevent damage even if condensation occurs. These methods are generally as follows.

(1) Install lining boards on the roof and side walls where condensation is prone to occur to prevent water droplets from falling.

(2) Apply water-absorbent coatings to the inner surfaces of the roof and side walls to absorb condensation droplets.

(3) Apply paint or other rust inhibitors on the surface of rust-prone cargo for anti-rust treatment.

(4) Seal the cargo with plastic film to prevent contact with condensation droplets.
