Loading of Containers with Overwidth Cargo in Sea Freight

Cargo that exceeds the width of a shipping container is not only constrained by the container's structure but also by handling conditions and container ship loading requirements. Overwidth limitations at stations and terminals depend on the type of machinery used. For example, a straddle carrier finds it difficult to handle cargo with an overwidth exceeding 10 cm (on one side).

Restrictions on overwidth cargo on container ships are mainly determined by the shape of the guide rail entries in the cell guides. Additionally, the gap between stacked containers imposes corresponding limits on overwidth cargo. Typically, this gap is around 200 mm on Japanese container ships and approximately 180 mm on vessels from other countries. If the overwidth cargo does not exceed this range, it can generally be loaded within the cell guides, which also offer some extra clearance—usually 80–150 mm—between the container and the cell guide pillars. When loading overwidth cargo, special attention must be paid to lateral securing. If such cargo shifts sideways, it may press against adjacent containers, potentially puncturing their side walls in severe cases. Therefore, securing overwidth container shipments requires stricter measures than ordinary containers.

Overwidth Cargo Loading Plan

Overwidth cargo is transported using open-top or flat rack containers. Ensure the cargo's center of gravity is centered. Prior approval from the shipping company is required. Lashing and securing requirements are more stringent.

Summary of Precautions for Overwidth Cargo Transport

Transporting overwidth cargo requires advance planning, selection of appropriate special container types, and thorough communication with the shipping company to confirm the transport plan.

Precautions for Loading Overwidth Cargo

Loading Limits: Overwidth typically does not exceed 30 cm for flat rack containers and 20 cm for open-top containers. The overwidth portion must be clearly indicated in the documentation.

Securing Requirements: Both sides of the overwidth cargo must be cross-lashed using steel wire ropes or straps. Exposed parts of the cargo should be covered with protective guards or warning signs.

Terminal Operations: Loading overwidth cargo onto the ship requires special lifting gear and takes longer. It is recommended to coordinate the loading time with the terminal in advance.
