Loading Methods for Reefer Containers in Container Shipping

Reefer container shipping can be divided into chilled cargo and frozen cargo. The former generally refers to cargo transported at a temperature selected to avoid freezing, or a temperature where the cargo surface is only slightly frozen, ranging from -1°C to +11°C. The purpose of cooling is to maintain the cargo's respiration and prevent condensation inside the container. The latter refers to cargo transported in a frozen state, with a temperature range spanning from -20°C to -1°C.

The temperature to be maintained for reefer cargo during transit is clearly indicated by the shipper upon consignment and must be strictly followed by the carrier. At the same time, the carrier should keep documents issued by the shipper concerning the temperature requirements for that specific shipment during transport to avoid disputes between the shipper and carrier over temperature issues in the event of a disagreement. The container and cargo should both be inspected before loading reefer cargo.

(1) The container must have a container qualification certificate or document issued by the container owner.

(2) The container's start-up, operation, and stop mechanisms are in normal working condition.

(3) The container ventilation openings are in the required state, and the drain pipes are unobstructed.

(4) The cargo has reached the specified loading temperature.

(5) When loading cargo, the cold air passage must not be blocked, and space should be left at the top.

(6) During loading, the refrigeration unit is turned off. Before loading, dunnage and other padding materials used inside the reefer container must be pre-cooled; clean and hygienic padding materials should be selected to avoid contaminating the cargo. It is strictly prohibited to load cargo that has deteriorated in freshness or become spoiled and smelly into the container, to avoid damaging other normal cargo.
