What is LCL Shipping?

LCL (Less than Container Load) shipping is a method where goods from multiple shippers share one container. It is a cost-effective option when the cargo volume is not enough to fill a full container.

LCL Pricing Method

Billing Basis

LCL freight is calculated based on the Revenue Ton (RT), which compares the actual weight and volume of the cargo, using the larger value as the billing basis:

  • Weight Ton: 1 ton = 1 revenue ton
  • Volume Ton: 1 cubic meter = 1 revenue ton
  • Billing Standard: Compare weight ton and volume ton, take the larger value

Example

A shipment weighing 2 tons and occupying 3 cubic meters → calculated as 3 revenue tons (volume ton > weight ton) A shipment weighing 5 tons and occupying 2 cubic meters → calculated as 5 revenue tons (weight ton > volume ton)

Components of LCL Costs

Basic Ocean Freight

Calculated as revenue ton × freight rate, this is the main part of the LCL cost.

Consolidation Fee

The fee for receiving and consolidating cargo at the origin warehouse by the consolidation company.

Destination Charges

Includes costs such as the de-stuffing fee and terminal handling charges at the destination port.

Customs Brokerage Fee

Costs for export customs declaration and import customs clearance at the destination.

Documentation Fee

Charges for handling transport documents like the bill of lading and cargo manifest.

LCL vs FCL Cost Comparison

Comparison Aspect LCL (Less than Container Load) FCL (Full Container Load)
Applicable Cargo Volume Small quantities insufficient for a full container Can fill one or more full containers
Billing Method By revenue ton Flat fee per container type
Unit Freight Cost Relatively higher Relatively lower
Flexibility Flexible, suitable for small shipments Suitable for large shipments

How to Control LSL Transportation Costs

  1. Optimize packaging: Reduce packaging volume to lower the revenue ton
  2. Balance heavy and light cargo: Combine heavy goods and lightweight cargo effectively
  3. Choose direct consolidation: Reduce transshipment handling fees

Note: The above explains the billing method. Actual freight costs are affected by factors such as shipping route, cargo volume, and market rates. Please consult a freight forwarder for an accurate quote.
