I. Construction Rate

In addition to published direct rates, the rate manual also publishes add-on amounts that cannot be used alone. When there is no published direct rate for the origin or destination of the cargo, the construction rate can be added to a known published direct rate to form a non-published direct rate.

It should be noted that when using the construction rate, the construction rate for general cargo rates can only be added to general cargo rates. The construction rates for specific commodity rates and unit load device rates can only be added to the same type of direct rates; they cannot be mixed. Furthermore, the construction rate can be added to the direct rate, or the direct rate can be added to the construction rate. Two construction rates can also be used in the calculation, but these two construction rates cannot be used consecutively.

II. Combination of Rate

The so-called combination of rate refers to when there is neither a direct rate nor a construction rate available between two points, an appropriate calculation point can be chosen between the origin and destination. The rates from the origin to that point and from that point to the destination are found separately, and the two rates are added together to form the lowest total rate for the entire journey.

Whether for construction rates or combination of rates, the choice of the intermediate calculation point, i.e., the choice of different routes, directly affects the calculated rate between the two points. Therefore, the carrier allows the shipper, under the condition of correct usage, to use the lowest value among the different calculation results as the applicable air freight rate for the cargo.

When selecting air freight rates, priority is given to using the lowest published direct rate. When no direct rate is available, use a construction rate or combination of rate. International air freight rates are calculated per kilogram or pound, taking the greater of gross weight or volumetric weight. Rates may increase during peak seasons; advance rate inquiries and booking are required.
