What are the types of consumer pallets used in container shipping?
Pallets can be used as stacking tools in warehouses or as handling tools in ports, as well as loading tools during transportation. The former are generally made of wood; although wooden pallets are expensive, they are strong and can be reused. The latter, especially those used for loading in international container shipping, cannot be recovered and are not required to be reused.
To minimize packaging costs as much as possible, various types of consumer pallets designed for single-use purposes are currently being widely developed. Although these consumer pallets still have many issues in terms of strength, operating performance, and storage performance, they are highly favored by shippers due to their low material costs.
Currently, common consumer pallets include three types: simple wooden pallets, corrugated paper pallets, and paper pallets.
1. Simple wooden pallets
These are pallets made by minimizing the number and thickness of deck boards. Although intended for single use, they often collapse under the weight of the cargo due to insufficient strength. Some simple wooden pallets cannot withstand forklift handling, so care must be taken during production to ensure a minimum level of rigidity. Additionally, some simple wooden pallets use wood for the base blocks and corrugated paperboard or thick cardboard for the other parts.
2. Corrugated paper pallets
Corrugated paper pallets are assembled using the longitudinal strength of corrugated paperboard. Since corrugated paperboard deforms and loses strength when exposed to moisture, these pallets can only carry certain types of cargo and are not suitable for applications requiring long transportation and storage times.
3. Paper pallets
These are made from hard cardboard or fiberboard and require folding or curling at one or both ends. Such pallets can only be handled using a special forklift equipped with a device to grip the folded or curled edge to pull or push the pallet in or out. Due to the low strength of paper pallets, they must be operated on unusually wide, flat fork tines, typically 300-400mm wide. Although paper pallets are low in price, they have not been widely adopted due to the need for special handling machinery and the difficulty of securing cargo on the pallet.
