A container is a large, standardized freight transport unit primarily used in ocean shipping, rail transport, road transport, and multimodal transport. The original design of containers aims to achieve efficient, mechanized, and standardized handling, storage, and transportation of goods.

Domestic ocean shipping (internal trade shipping) typically uses various types of containers. Different container types are suitable for different kinds and sizes of cargo. Do you know what types of containers are used in domestic ocean shipping?

Based on the type of cargo loaded and structural differences, ocean shipping containers can be divided into multiple categories. Below, we will introduce the types of containers used in domestic ocean shipping by category.

1. Dry Cargo Container

Dry cargo containers, also known as general-purpose containers, are the most common type of ocean container. They are usually completely sealed, offering waterproof, moisture-proof, and dust-proof capabilities, making them suitable for transporting the majority of common general cargo, such as textiles, chemical products, hardware and electrical goods, electronic machinery, instruments, machinery and parts, agricultural products, and food.

Dry cargo containers are classified by size into: 20GP, 20HQ, 40GP, 40HQ

2. Refrigerated Container

Refrigerated containers are equipped with refrigeration equipment, providing controlled temperature and cargo preservation functions. They are used for transporting cargo that requires temperature control, such as food, medicine, cosmetics, and fresh produce.

Refrigerated containers are classified by size into: 20RF, 40RH

3. Open Top Container

Open top containers have a roof that can be opened or have no fixed roof surface. When loading, a waterproof cover can be used to cover the top. These containers are suitable for loading tall, large items and heavy cargo that need to be hoisted by crane from the top, such as large machinery and equipment, building materials, glass, steel, and timber.

Open top containers are classified by size into: 20OT, 40OT

4. Flat Rack Container

Flat rack containers have no roof and no side walls, allowing cargo to be loaded and unloaded from the side. These containers are commonly used for transporting non-standard sized cargo, such as heavy goods, oversized or over-height large machinery and equipment, industrial components, and building materials.

Flat rack containers are classified by size into: 20FR, 40FR

In addition to the types above, there are special container types, such as tank containers and automobile containers. These are designed based on different needs and cargo characteristics. With the development of domestic logistics, economy, and trade, the types of ocean shipping containers will become increasingly diverse to meet the needs of even more varied cargo transportation.
