How Weight Limits Affect Your Shipment

By container size:

20GP: Weight-limited. You will typically hit the payload limit before you fill the container's cubic capacity (28 CBM). Best for dense, heavy cargo.

40GP: Volume-limited for most cargo. You will fill the container's cubic capacity (67 CBM) before reaching the weight limit — unless shipping particularly dense goods.

40HQ: Same as 40GP — volume-limited. The extra height adds capacity without increasing weight limits.

Axle weight calculation for road transport

Road transport in China is regulated by axle weight limits, not just total container weight. A typical 3-axle tractor + 2-axle trailer combination has these limits:

Practical calculation: For a 20GP container loaded to 22,000 kg cargo + 2,200 kg tare = 24,200 kg, the axle distribution when centered on a tri-axle trailer is approximately:

  • Steering: 5,500 kg ✅ (under 7,000 kg limit)
  • Drive tandem: 17,000 kg ✅ (under 18,000 kg limit)
  • Trailer tri-axle: 22,700 kg ✅ (under 24,000 kg limit)

> Tip: Ask your trucking provider for the axle weight distribution before loading. Uneven loading (cargo concentrated at one end of the container) can exceed individual axle limits even when total weight is compliant.

The cost implication:

Shipping a container that is "weight-limited" (full by weight but not by volume) means you pay for the whole container while only using part of its space. This is acceptable for high-value dense cargo but inefficient for low-value heavy goods.
