2. Detailed Breakdown of Vessel Types

Panamax — The Old Canal-Era Limit

Dimensions were constrained by the old Panama Canal lock chambers (305 m × 33.5 m), with a maximum capacity of around 5,000 TEU. This class is now being phased out gradually.

New Panamax

Following the 2016 Panama Canal expansion, the new lock chambers (426 m × 55 m) allow New Panamax vessels to carry up to 12,000 TEU. This class is currently the workhorse of both Asia–Europe and Trans-Pacific routes.

ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ship)

The world's largest container ships currently in service, with capacities exceeding 20,000 TEU and lengths approaching 400 meters. They can currently call at only a handful of deep-water ports globally (such as Shanghai Yangshan, Ningbo Zhoushan, Shenzhen Yantian, Rotterdam, etc.).
