Container shipping freight calculation. The calculation method for container shipping freight is the same as that for conventional liner freight. It is also based on the rates and calculation methods specified in the tariff, and similarly includes basic freight and surcharges.
However, since container cargo can be packed either at a Container Freight Station (CFS) or stuffed and shipped as Full Container Load (FCL) by the shipper, the freight calculation method also differs. Mainly, when container cargo is shipped as FCL and the carrier's container is used, the calculation of container shipping freight is subject to regulations on "minimum billable tonnage" and "maximum chargeable tonnage." In addition, there are also specific regulations for the calculation of freight and surcharges for special cargo.
Calculation of FCL shipping freight. For the calculation of freight for FCL container cargo: one method is the same as for LCL cargo, billing according to the actual freight ton. Another method, which is currently more commonly adopted, is to charge freight per container based on the container type.
When cargo is shipped as FCL using containers owned by the shipping company, the carrier applies regulations regarding "Container Minimum Utilization" and "Container Maximum Utilization" for the payment of shipping freight.
