In addition to box packaging (mainly corrugated cardboard boxes and wooden boxes), the outer packaging of container cargo often includes bundle packaging, bag packaging, and drum/can packaging. This article briefly introduces these types of packaging as follows.

1. Bundle packaging

Bundle packaging is suitable for goods that will not be damaged even under a certain degree of compression.

Compared with other packaging, bundle packaging has two main characteristics: low packaging cost and convenience for loading and handling.

Goods suitable for bundle packaging include: fiber products, wool, cotton, and paper, among others.

Fiber products are generally wrapped in linen or cotton cloth; wool and cotton are usually wrapped in burlap; paper is typically sandwiched between wooden boards and then tightened with steel straps from top to bottom.

2. Bag packaging

Bag packaging is mainly used for packaging dry powdery or granular goods, but special paper bags can also be used to package liquid goods.

There are many types of bag packaging, mainly including paper bags, cotton cloth bags, and jute bags.

Paper bags are suitable for packaging cement, rice, wheat, grains, refined sugar, milk powder, fertilizer, chemicals, and tree fruits, etc.

Cotton cloth bags are suitable for packaging flour, granulated sugar, fertilizer, etc.

Jute bags are suitable for packaging rice, wheat, grains, etc.

Although bag packaging has the disadvantage of goods potentially leaking through the stitching threads, it offers advantages such as convenience in packaging and handling operations and high loading efficiency.

The most widely used type in container cargo is paper bag packaging.

Paper bags come in many forms and structures, such as double-sided sewn, single-sided sewn, open-mouth, with flaps or valves; and based on the shape of the bag bottom, there are flat bottom bags, square bottom bags, shell edge bags, flap bags, etc.

The main material for paper bags is kraft paper. Kraft paper bags can be used for heavy-duty packaging, carrying ceramics, building materials, agricultural and forestry products, as well as fertilizers, feed, chemical products, and medical supplies. Japan uses up to 65 million tons of kraft paper bags annually.

3. Drum/can packaging

Drum packaging mainly refers to wooden drum packaging. Wooden drums can hold liquid goods, semi-liquid goods, and powdery or granular goods, and can also be used for packaging heavy items such as iron nails and bolts.

In sea freight container transportation, when using wooden drums to package liquid goods, leakage may occur due to damage to the drums. Therefore, except for certain special liquid goods, can packaging is generally used to replace wooden drum packaging.

The can packaging mentioned here primarily refers to metal cans and drum-shaped cans. In addition to packaging liquid goods, semi-liquid goods, and powdery goods, can packaging is also used for airtight transportation of volatile items, dangerous items, and corrosive items.

Small and medium-sized cylindrical steel cans and tinplate cans can be used to package goods such as paint, grease, and medicine. Drum-shaped cans are suitable for packaging petroleum, grease, chemicals, and dangerous goods, etc.

Hard cardboard barrels made of thick paperboard are also widely used today. They are cylindrical and are used to package goods such as medicine, food, and electronic parts. Both the top and bottom of the cylinder have lids. Since these lids can easily fall off, care must be taken during handling.
