Shipping from mainland China to Hong Kong, choosing the right transport mode can save time and money. The core of China-Hong Kong logistics is matching cargo characteristics with transportation methods. The distance to the port and the industrial characteristics of cities in the Pearl River Delta vary, so you also need to consider the city's port distance and industry type when selecting a transport mode. Starting from the four basic modes of China-Hong Kong logistics, and taking into account the actual situations of cities like Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Foshan, and Zhongshan, this article provides a one-stop selection reference. No matter which city you ship from or what service level you need, there is always a mode that suits your requirements. The decision-making process for selecting a China-Hong Kong logistics mode should comprehensively consider four dimensions: shipment volume, time sensitivity, cargo value, and handling conditions. Rationally combining LTL and FTL can significantly reduce logistics costs.

1. Comparison of Four Transport Modes

China-Hong Kong logistics has four basic transport modes: LTL (Less Than Truckload), FTL (Full Truckload), Express, and Cold Chain. LTL shares costs based on cargo volume, arrives in Hong Kong in 1-2 days, and is suitable for regular small-batch shipments, making it the most frequently used mode. FTL uses an entire truck exclusively for one customer, arriving in Hong Kong the same day, and is suitable for large batches or urgent goods. Express delivery takes 4-8 hours for urgent items, suitable for samples and documents. Cold chain ensures temperature control throughout the journey, suitable for food and pharmaceuticals.

LTL charges are based on the greater of weight (CNY/kg) or volume (CNY/CBM), FTL has a fixed price per vehicle model, and express charges are per shipment, including customs clearance and delivery fees. Choosing which mode depends on three factors: shipment volume, time sensitivity, and cargo value. See details in LTL vs FTL Selection Guide and China-HK Vehicle Encyclopedia.

2. LTL (Less Than Truckload) Transport

LTL involves consolidating cargo from multiple customers onto one China-Hong Kong truck, with costs shared based on actual shipment volume. There are fixed daily departure schedules: pickup at various PRD cities in the morning, sorting and loading at Shenzhen warehouse in the afternoon, customs clearance via Shenzhen Bay or Huanggang Port in the evening, and delivery in Hong Kong the next morning. LTL charges are based on the greater of weight (CNY/kg) or volume (CNY/CBM), consistent with the pricing logic of LCL sea freight – light, bulky items are charged by volume, heavy items by weight.

Because LTL goods share the truck with other customers' cargo, packaging must be sturdy enough to prevent crushing. Cartons should be sealed tightly with packing tape in an 'I' pattern, and pallets need at least 3 layers of stretch wrap for fixation. Fragile items must have fragile labels and upward arrows marked on the outer box for special handling during loading. LTL is suitable for conventional goods like electronic components, hardware accessories, garments and textiles, daily necessities, and samples. Customers from outside the area can first send goods to the Zhuhai warehouse to arrange LTL shipment to Hong Kong.

3. FTL (Full Truckload) Transport

FTL means one China-Hong Kong truck carries only one customer's goods, going directly from the factory to Hong Kong with no intermediate transshipment. It has a fixed price per vehicle model, with various options from 3-ton trucks to 40-foot containers, delivering the same day. Suitable for cargo over 5 CBM, high-value goods, and machinery needing lashing. FTL for imports also applies, with goods picked up from Hong Kong and transported back to mainland China in a fully sealed process.

Furniture companies in Dalingshan and Houjie, Dongguan, heavily use FTL – furniture is large and irregularly shaped, making FTL more cost-effective than LTL. Machinery and chemical companies in Huangpu, Guangzhou, also predominantly use FTL.

4. Express and Cold Chain Transport

Express delivery is suitable for documents, samples, and urgent small items: 4-8 hours from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, 8-12 hours from Guangzhou, with easy per-shipment billing. Main use cases for express include confirming orders with export samples, passing customs documents, and emergency e-commerce restocking. Although the cost is higher, the time advantage is clear. Cold chain goods use refrigerated trucks set to refrigerated or frozen modes, with full temperature control. Cold chain China-HK transport mainly comes from PRD frozen food factories supplying Hong Kong supermarkets, pharmaceuticals transshipped via Hong Kong, and flowers exported by air through Hong Kong airport. The key to cold chain transport is pre-cooling; both the cargo and the refrigerated truck need to be pre-cooled to the transport temperature. The biggest challenge is temperature control during port queuing and customs clearance in hot summer weather; choosing Shenzhen Bay Port or avoiding peak hours is recommended. Customs inspection of cold chain goods is relatively strict, so it's advised to prepare quarantine certificates and temperature control records in advance.

5. Shipping Guide by City

Shenzhen. From Shenzhen to Hong Kong: LTL 1-2 days, FTL same day, Express 4-8 hours. Nanshan and Bao'an to Shenzhen Bay Port 20-30 minutes, Longgang and Longhua to Huanggang 30-40 minutes, Xili and Futian flexible options. Door-to-door pickup covers all Shenzhen. Shenzhen is also the core hub for transshipping goods from other regions to Hong Kong via its warehouses.

Dongguan. Dongguan-wide LTL 1-2 days, FTL same day. Driving time from Dongguan towns to Shenzhen ports 30-60 minutes: Chang'an and Humen to Shenzhen Bay about 30 minutes, Changping to Huanggang about 50 minutes. Electronic industries in Changping and Chang'an mainly use small and medium parts, with LTL being most economical. Garments in Humen are bulky yet lightweight, suitable for LTL charged by volume. Furniture in Dalingshan and Houjie is large, so FTL direct is recommended.

Guangzhou. Guangzhou LTL 1-2 days, FTL same day to next day. Distance from Guangzhou to Shenzhen ports about 80-150km: Panyu to Shenzhen Bay is closest at about 80km/1 hour, Baiyun about 130km/1.5 hours. Guangzhou also has access via the Zhuhai route to Hong Kong – Guangzhou to Zhuhai via Guangzhu West Line about 1.5 hours, then via Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) to Hong Kong about 1 hour. This dual-route option is a unique advantage of Guangzhou over Shenzhen and Dongguan.

Zhongshan and Foshan. Zhongshan to Zhuhai warehouse only 40km, Foshan about 70km, then via HZMB to Hong Kong about 1 hour, total time near that of the Shenzhen route. Zhongshan mainly has small home appliances and lighting, suitable for LTL; Foshan's furniture and building materials are recommended for FTL.

Other PRD Cities. Zhuhai can reach Hong Kong directly via HZMB in about 1 hour. Huizhou to Shenzhen about 70km via Shenzhen transshipment. Jiangmen and Zhaoqing transship via Zhuhai warehouse. Bofeng Logistics offers door-to-door pickup in all cities of Guangdong Province, and transshipment of goods from other areas to Hong Kong and Macau via Zhuhai warehouse. Customers in Guangdong Province have morning pickup and afternoon customs clearance; customers outside the province ship to Zhuhai warehouse one day in advance to connect with the Hong Kong-Macau dedicated line. Bofeng Logistics operates a fleet with both Guangdong-Z and FV entry permits, ensuring stable daily departures. Shipping from Shenzhen to Hong Kong can be fully completed within 24 hours, and from Guangzhou about 36 hours.
